Web development is the art of making websites that DO things. Websites that require a login, offer useful tools for the users, provide e-commerce capabilities such as a shopping cart or online payments, online forums and more.

In your case If you are web designer I have to know web techs such as javascript and html.
In short you are not raw coder but you should capable of coding in order to meet web programmer
