Question : Trying do I determine who has a file open?

The environment is a Windows 2003 server sp2 with XP and Win7 workstations in a domain.

One user accidentially moved about 20 foolders from one location in a user share, to another folder in the same share. I've been trying to move the folder back one at a time, but on most folders, I get a message saying The action can't be completed because the folder or a fileis open in another propgram.

I have local and remote users who might be in it. I can't reboot the system until tomorrow to clear out all users and I need to get most of this done tonight.

I've gone into file server management and checked to see who has this file open, but this share is not listed as having any files opened in it. How do I determine who has the files open?.

Answer : Trying do I determine who has a file open?

one freeware program that is useful for identifying open files and handles is Process Explorer.
Using that, you can search for a file (or folder name) and it will show you all the related files, handles, registry info that is open relating to it.
I use it all the time when windows locks up a file and i can't delete it.
Its actually distributed by Microsoft now, so its safe to use on your Windows 2003 server.
