Question : will a missing backplate offset the functionality of a motherboard?

Hi Everyone;

         Recently, I replaced a motherboard with one bought from a friend.  The old back plate with its respective openings for USB connectors, video, PS/2 Mouse/KB, etc. will not fit properly with the newer motherboard.  So, I decided to simply leave it off.  However, I am wondering if leaving it off will damage the motherboard.  As I see it, the backplate is mostly just used for cosmetic purposes and to help keep the dust out of the motherboard, but, I am uncertain about any other reasons for it.

          Any followup to this question will be appreciated.

         Thank you.

Not instantly, although it is a lot easier for dust to get in, and for metallic objects and water vapour to get in and break it by short circuit or clogging up with dust.

If you were inserting a USB and slipped, the connector could cause a short if it touched the motherboard.

Not vital but necessary, I would advise trying to get one off of Ebay or something!
