Question : SBS Standard vs R2 Standard

Hello Experts,

I am currently in the following situation: I have a T110 server from Dell with x3430 2.4GHz processor and 4GB of RAM. It came with SBS Standard. I need it to provide access for up to 5 user at one time to Remote Desktop Services. I will be running only two applications (Quickbooks and Smart Service). After I asked here I realized that SBS does not support TS, so I purchased Windows Server R2 Standard and the initial idea was to use Hyper-V and run SBS and R2 as child OSs on the same machine that I have. Again after I asked here I found out that my RAM is not enough to do this. I already spend $2000 for the R2 with all the CALs I need and now i am looking at spending about $700 more for memory upgrade or about $800 for another server to run the R2 with the TS on it only.

Now I am wondering if instead of spending another $700-800 I can get rid of the SBS and install the R2 on the machine I have. Then use it as a DC and TS. I know it is not recommended, however I will only have about 10 users in total and only 5 at a time dialing in to use the applications. No Exchange, no nothing else!

My question is: Do you think I will be fine doing that or should I really get another box (I really don't think it is worth it to upgrade the memory, because of the cost, or I might be wrong)?

Thank you for your help,

Stan

Answer : SBS Standard vs R2 Standard

The R2 will handle the configuration you have with the caveat that you do not overextend the ram by running multiple applications in terminal server.  Not sure what is cost prohibitive on the memory installation as it would undoubtedly be cheaper than scrapping an OS you have allready paid for.  Either way r2  with the processor and ram you have will handle the config as a stand alone.
