Question : Reinstalling Server 2003
I have a 2003 server which is three years old. I am using it in a school as a domain controller with AD, I have another 2003 server which is used as a file server and for terminal services.
Both these servers are the same make and model, both running 2003 R1.
The AD server is becoming very cranky - not allowing me to connect via terminal services, and not letting me log on sometimes and not always letting me reboot - says that it is loading updates, but can go for a day like this. All the time it works ok as a domain controller, irrespective of what state it is in. It has 2 hard drives, mirrored. Takes ages to startup, and has the feel of a problem machine.
It is the holidays and this server is getting light use until early September.
What is best
1. Reformat the hard drive and reinstall 2003, using restore system state
2. Move AD to the other server and make the AD the file server, add Restore System State
3. Assume that this server has a hardware problem and buy another server
4. Reinstall and recreate the AD from scratch, not a pleasant thought with 200 users to create.
5. Try and clear up the problem with the AD as it stands.
Thanks
