Question : Problem with OS

Hi, my friend has a Toshiba laptop that is displaying on boot up:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disk and restart.
2. Choose your language settings and click next.
3. Click Repair Your Computer.

She has Vista on the laptop, but has the windows 7 disk. Should I insert the windows 7 disk, or not? Is it better to insert the vista disk? And if so, how do I later upgrade to Windows 7 for her?

Further question, will following these instructions wipe out her programs and files?

Thanks!

Answer : Problem with OS

I followed your link, but right now it does not appear as if you will successfully recover this install.

I would fix the fan first. Heat will burn your/her legs, ruin the finish on your table or desk, and cause all sorts of other problems with the motherboard and other hardware. It could easily cause your hard drive to fail prematurely. I hope that has not already started and is the cause for your current situation. Fix the fan first.

Then, install 7.
