Question : Bringing a Windows 2008 R2 DC into an Exisiting Windows 2003 domain

I have an existing  Windows 2003 Domain (lab), that is in Windows 2003 mode.
I am trying to introduce a Windows 2008 R2 DC. The Windows 2003 servers are 32bit and obviously the windows 2008 server is 64 bit.

I brought the 2008 server up and into the domain as a member server. Tried to run the adprep tool from its media, but since its media is 64 bit, it would not work. I then downloaded Windows 2008 server trial (not R2) from MS's website. I used that adprep and ran adprep /forestprep and it ran.
I then ran adprep /domainprep and it went fine.
When i try to run DCPROMO on the Windows 2008 R2 server it says the schema needs to be extended and to run adprep /forestprep. I am assuming this is because the schema version in Windows 2008 is 44 and windows 2008 R2 is 47... help please.

Answer : Bringing a Windows 2008 R2 DC into an Exisiting Windows 2003 domain

If you stop the logon service it will stop it authenticated. However, it will also stop recplication between the domain controllers, so it will get out of sync and will be no good when you wan to use it as a backup.

the other option is to put it on a seperate subnet and then configure AD Sites and Services to sync between the 2 subnets. This way the computers will not us it to logon to as it is not on the local subnet.
