Question : Vmware Esxi 4.0 can't install Server 2008 R2 64bit

I'm trying to get Windows Server 2008 R2 installed as a virtual machine on Vmware Esxi 4.0  The host machine is a HP Proliant  Dl180 G6.  I get to where it starts to install and then it says a required CD/DVD device driver is missing.  I tested installing 2003 with the same settings in ESXi and it installed with no problems.  Any suggestions what driver it is requiring to install 2008 R2?

I do have the virtual settings in bios enabled.  The CPU is the Xeon e5540

Answer : Vmware Esxi 4.0 can't install Server 2008 R2 64bit

Hi,

I have recently installed 10 W2K8R2 Clients over two ESX1 4.0 update 1 systems (one server was a Fujitsu and the other one was HPDL380G5). I didn't have a problem as you have mentioned.

Please Check them:
- Check your DVD driver
- Check your installation media ( I suspect your medie even the original media from microsoft can be faulty)
- Try to transfer a konwn working .iso image to your ESXi server ( I genrally create a directory called ISOS on datastore od ESXi installetion drive and use .ISO file as CDROM image to boot.

Cheers,
K.
