This is not an Exchange server, however just a virtual SMTP server.
Two things to try:
1. Type help to get the listing of commands available, this is after telnetting to the server.
2. Telnet to the ipv4 address instead of using localhost. Your localhost may be returning the ::1 ipv6 address which 'could' be causing issues.
