I have come across this problem before and it came down to a corrupt file.
My first recommendation would be to run a disk check on all the drives in the backup and see whether that solves the issue. I would also recommend that you upgrade to a later version of the software than version 8.x. With Symantec now issueing version 13 (2010), the change upwould be logical and gives far more flexibility than the version you are currently using.
