Question : Windows Explorer Freezing when Browsing Into a Certain Folder

I have a Windows XP computer that has a folder that is used for a 3rd party application.  It has about 4k files in it, and is 1.2g in size.  9 times out of 10, when you click on the folder to browse it's contents, the computer will lock up for about 5-10 minutes, and then it will finally take you into the folder.  I have tried chkdsk, defrag, turned off indexing, all to no avail.  I moved the folder over to another WIndows XP computer to see if I had the same problem, and it worked fine on another XP computer.  Any help will be greatly appreciated, this problem is very frustrating.

Answer : Windows Explorer Freezing when Browsing Into a Certain Folder

My guess is that your anti-virus Real Time Scan is doing this.  While you browse your folders, your real time scan will check every files you open under Windows Explorer and check for viruses before displaying them to you.  If you have a 1.2g folder with 4k files in them, it will take a long time to scan everything before showing you the folder.

Go into your anti-virus, and check for a feature that you can exclude folders from the Real Time scan (NOT the schedule scan).  Put the folder that is causing the problem, and see how it goes...

Good luck.
