Question : Removing Domain Controller from Windows 2003 domain

We have a domain that has 3 Windows 2003 domain controllers. The main DC has DNS installed which is active directory integrated. I need to remove the main DC from the domain as I will be installing a new DC and moving all DC's to windows 2008. My concern is that if I DCPROMO the main DC it will uninstall the DNS as well and I will lose my DNS. Is there a correct procedure for doing this?

Answer : Removing Domain Controller from Windows 2003 domain

You'll need to build up your Windows 2008 DC and move the FSMO roles to it. Any Windows 2008 server that has Active Directory on it is required to have DNS as well, and once the 2008 server is promoted and given all FSMO roles, it will pull the DNS integrated zones through replication automatically. Once that's done, you should be able to safely demote the 2003 server.
