Question : Who should change IP addresses pointing to MX records?
Hi,
For a client hosted with us, we also maintain their DNS through EasyDNS.
However, they host their own email, using Exchange Server with a different provider.
They came us to just now asking for pointing their MX records to new IP addresses. As far as my knowledge goes, RFC 1035 mandates pointing MX records to FQDN rather than IP addresses.
Now, should not this IP address change be handled by the service provider running their Exchange Server? The MX records remain the same (mail.domain.com and mail1.domain.com) and so do the respective preferences (0,10).
EasyDNS itself doesn't offer the ability to point MX records to IP addresses.
Could someone clarify this? I am kind of lost on what to tell the client.
Thanks in advance.
Answer : Who should change IP addresses pointing to MX records?
As you said MX points to FQDN so whoever manages or has control over the FQDSN needs to update the record to point to a new the new IP.
