Question : how can I enter a genuine product key in Windows 7

I am working on a machine loaded with Windows 7 which appears to be not genuine according to Microsoft. my customer has purchased a genuine copy of Windows 7 ultimate and I am trying to figure out how to enter the genuine key without doing a clean install...I am trying to save all his programs, etc.
The procedure for changing the key is not available...right click Computer/properties/click change product key at the bottom of system properties..There is no activation info at the bottom .
Control panel does not have "System and Security" only "system" which opens the same window as right clicking "Computer."
Any suggestions?
