Question : PC display unreadable when plugged into the TV?

when i plug my pc into my tv (dvi to hdmi) the screen, the icons are really small and i cant read the writing.  Does anyone know why? and how i can make it so i can read?

My tv is a 37 inch panasonic ??????
My graphics card is a gforce FX 5500
DVI out of the graphic card to hdmi
The resolution is ????????????
im running windows vista
