Question : Choppy sound in VLC

when playing a DVD in VLC the sound seems to skip every 3 to 10 seconds. I believe it is a setting within the program i am looking for but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Does it happen with all DVD's? In my opinion, the best media playing software is "Media Player Classic". Link here:

I am trying to load windows xp on a hp g71-340us laptop. The factory installed OS is windows 7 Home Premium. When the set-up disk is loading i get a Stop 0x0000007b BSOD.
