Question : w3wp.exe IIS workder Process uses all of the systems RAM

Hello,

Server 2008 Standard with Exchange, IIS, and SQL on it. 4GB of RAM.

In the last few weeks IIS w3wp.exe continiously consumes more RAM until Exchange is non-response. Ending the task on w3wp.exe will fix the problem for about 4 to 5 hours before it maxes out again. The last time I ended the process it was using 1.7GB of ram. System has 3 users in a small office connected to it. They mostly use Outlooks Calendar feature and word processing. Any ideas?

Answer : w3wp.exe IIS workder Process uses all of the systems RAM

It does seem odd that the w3wp.exe process would grow to be that large.  Usually this indicates a memory leak in some web application on that website.

You could set up the application pool to recycle itself after it consumes a specific amount of memory.  This will keep exchange from freezing up. Although it doesnt fix the root of the problem itself, it just masks the symptoms temporarily.

Do your users use the outlook thick client, or OWA?
