Question : Symantec Corporate ver. 8, antivirus server service will not start

Running Symantec Corporate version 8.1 on windows server 2003 sp2.  Have enough free space in c: and d: to store virus definitions.

Need help in figuring out why antivirus server service errors out with " could not start the symantec antivirus server. Event viewer saids "Symantec service failed to start. Virus defintions file is invalid. (CC001000).   I know we are running a really old version but at this point, we are not ready to update to the latest  version and just need this running again.

Initial problem was, the latest definitions weren't being reflected even though the definitions were downloaded to the d:\pf\sav.  the program was reflecting 6/28/10 even though it had 7/11/10 defintitions in in d:\pf\sav.

I tried the downloading the latest .xdb files even though it was there already and replaced it.  didn't run the intelligent updater since you're not supposed to if the server is managing clients which it is.  That didn't work, so i restarted the services (symantec antivirus server and symantec system center discovery services).  The discovery service started up fine but now my symantec antivirus server service does not start.

Followed the directions in http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2002102209110448?Open&src=w
to backdate to 6/28/10 definitions, the symantec server service still does not start.  (did a reboot in addition to restarting services)
*the only step i didn't do was delete the .wdb files from the client pc's.  didn't do that because we hav 60-70 clients. would be very difficult to do.

Do not want to reinstall the program since it is an older version.  Are there any other solutions I'm not using other than a reinstall of the entire program?

thanks in advance.

Answer : Symantec Corporate ver. 8, antivirus server service will not start

We've installed Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 on a new server.  We'll see how that works.  Thanks for your comments.
