Question : Microsoft Server Licence

Hi there,

Our server needed re-installed last week, we did not receive any discs from the original supplier, when i check the dell service tag it tells me it was bought (by supplier) without any software. when we asked for the original discs the claim it is just a download as we have licence for non profit organisation.

Is this correct, the desktops all have the official dell xp product id on the side, the server has none, as they have not supplied discs and manuals we do not have the product id for the server.

If it was just a download, sureley you would still need a product id to install it?

any advice would be great, feel like we have been taked for a ride.

Cheers,
Steven

Answer : Microsoft Server Licence

You are right, with M$ OS, server and workstation, you need a product id to install.

They could've used a license from their TechNet subscription, which would not be allowed in a production machine, whether you're nonprofit or for profit.

I recommend using the Magical Jellybean Keyfinder to record the Product ID used. Then check with Microsoft to see whether that is a valid ID and what kind of license it uses.

And then talk with the company who built the box for you, asking them to check their records for that Product ID.
