Question : how to set up a countdown timer using an animated GIF?

Hello. I have a client who wants me to set up a countdown timer using an animated GIF.

The client says:

"We need a timer— an animated GIF —that would count down for the next 6 months by days, minutes, hours, and maybe seconds till national tax cuts expire at the end of the year. It would be small enough to fit in the right sidebar of the front page and there’d be a title, something like “How long until the national tax cuts expire?” and a link to a research page."

I told her that I could set up a countdown timer in PHP, ASP, or ColdFusion, depending on her web server's operating system. But she says that her boss insists that the countdown timer must be an animated GIF.

I told her that maybe an animated GIF is possible, but we would need to make a "frame" for each frame of the clock, or at least an image for each digit of the clock and then program a way to decrement the digits according to the tax countdown.

What do you think? Has anyone ever heard of setting up a countdown using an animated GIF?

Please, if you have ideas, I am grateful to hear them.

Eric
