also make sure you have enabled WPA and not WPA2 -- if you have any devices that require WPA (older wi-fi devices) and you set the router to WPA2, its never going to connect.
I have the same PN router, and MAC Address lock-down was preventing by Blackberry Bold from connected, despite it being on the allowed list, removed it and it linked no problem.
Make sure he has the final firmware release from Netgear, i think it was version 3.01.xx for the G and GT models. Check the base plate sticker as there have been several versions of this router and you need to match the version to get the right firmware (in the UK there have been 5 versions, very popular router).
you could also select WPA+WPA2 encryption if the router has the setting, to cover all bases. use the Lenovo System Update 4.0 to verify that the notebook has all the latest drivers installed, including Wireless - its under the ThinkPad Technologies program group or you can install it from here -
