Question : enable file shares on a Windows home LAN
I have a home network and want to share files between computers. I have a PC with Vista Home Ultimate 32bit, and a laptop with Vista 64 Ultimate. They are connected through a Belkin wireless router.
I have network discovery and file sharing turned on on both computers. Both computers are visible in each others network folder.
The problem is when I click on the Icon for the computer in network center; on the laptop I can see the PC and it's shared folders, but get an error message when I try to access the shared folder. On the PC I get the error message when I click on the Laptop computer icon.
The messages are:
PC: "Windows cannot access \\JBLaptop."
Error Code 0x80070035
Network path not found.
-It's querying DNS?
Laptop: windows cannot access AMD\\shares\
Access Denied
Error 0x80070005
I AM able to access the files I want on the PC from the laptop. On the PC I selected the folder, properties, sharing, advanced, and enabling read write permissions plus set share permissions to everyone. This seems like a back door to direct access of the shares.
Is there a way to share files and music ad hoc without getting error messages? They are both Vista, and there is no third party firewalls or anti virus running at the time of the share.
If someone has enabled shares several times, how long does it take? It seems like you should be able to enable network discovery, enable file and printer sharing the security console, and everything in your shared folders should be accessible..especially if setting up for someone who will be adding files and folders to their shares. They don't have to adjust advanced settings for each folder they create, do they?
Answer : enable file shares on a Windows home LAN
You need to make sure teh same username/password combinations exist on each computer for network access without giving "Everyone" access.
