Question : Domain Controller rename and IP change

Hi. I am planning on replacing a current DC with some new hardware but am keeping the old system as a DC. I want change the old DC's name to DC2 from DC1 and change its IP address and then install the new server with the old servers name (DC1) and its old IP. We are running in Windows 2003 functional level. The old server is running DHCP and DNS which I plan on migrating to the new system. These are the steps I plan on taking... any comments or recommendations would be appreciated.

1.      Export DHCP database from old w08f0001 and stop DHCP services on it
2.      Change name of old server from DC1 to DC2 and its IIP - Reboot
3.      Change name of new server to DC1 and IP to 172.16.64.5 - Reboot
4.      Enable and Start DHCP on new server
5.      Import DHCP database to new DC1
6.      Authorize DHCP service on new server
8.      Promote to DC

Answer : Domain Controller rename and IP change

That should work for you, after step 2 just double check in DNS to make sure all the records have updated.  I would even consider renaming and checking then change the IP.

Is DC1 a certificate authority...if it is then you wouldn't be able to rename it.

Thanks
Mike
