Question : User profile service in Sharepoint 2010

I am having problems with the user profile service in sharepoint 2010.  I am using NTLM authentication yet when adjusting the permission level I get the following "An error has occurred in the claim providers configured from this site collection"

The AD sync works fine and I have loads of profiles but I cant change any details, add pictures or setup mysites due to the above problem.  I have tried deleting and recreating the user profile service which did not solve my issue.

I have discovered the problem.  I was accessing the CA site using an alternate access mapping for a different web application.  When browsing to the correct one there is no error.
