Question : Ubuntu - Convert Desktop Hard Drive to Laptop? Just ext4 format and copy all files?

Here's my situation, I have a desktop AMD Semperon Quad /w 8 gigs ddr3 running Ubuntu 10.04 x64

I'm replacing my desktop with an Intel i7 Quad 8gig ddr3 HP Laptop, so what I want to do it just copy my desktop hard drive to a  USB laptop drive and install that drive in my laptop.  I know this would be impossible to do in windows, but is it possible in Ubuntu?

Here's my current plan.

1.Disable Hardware Drivers
2.Format New Laptop drive to ext4
3.Boot off Ubuntu CD, then copy Desktop files to new Laptop Hard drive
4.Turn on laptop and see what happens...

Has anyone else out there tried this? Am I missing any steps? If this works I'll really love Ubuntu.

The easiest way is clonizing your har drive. you can use both enterprise tools like "acronis" or just using dd command in linux. This way you do not need to do anything and if you have a full version kernel and modules on your old drive after  ">> "4.Turn on laptop and see what happens..." you will have a fully functional Linux. like the one you have been using on your desktop.

If  you have experience in installing and repairing boot loader you can just copy whole the HDD data on your new disk and then try to repair it. In the case of SuSE its too easy but in ubuntu it is more complicated.
