Question : Windows 2008 - HP LaserJet 2600n drivers aren't working

we are migrating over to a new Windows 2008 server and one of the first things that I've done is to create the print shares on the new 2008 server. We've had a fair bit of problems getting the correct driver for some of the printers but have finally got them working except for the HP LaserJet 2600n printer. The current print queue on the Windows 2003 server work fine. The drivers that I loaded on the 2008 Server were the Vista 32 and 64 bit drivers.
The problem is when we send a print job to the printer, it sits in the print queue and is never sent to the printer...until we restart the print queue on the 2008 server. The jobs print out and then any future jobs sent to that printer sit in the queue again

What can I do to resolve this issue?

The problem could be that the 2600 is a GDI printer. These are also called host-based, where the Windows graphics engine does all the hard work of converting the page to dots on the page. With more intelligent printers, it's the printer that does that job. GDI printers have one advantage: they're cheap, as they need almost no intelligence.

One of their drawbacks though is that they require a different driver for just about every version of the operating system. HP's website shows drivers for Vista, but not for 2008. With more intelligent printers that might not matter (after all 2008 is a version of Vista), but with a GDI printer it may well be a killer.

I assume the drivers work fine if you install them on a Vista machine. If that is the case, I suspect that you have a useless printers until HP release 2008 drivers. They may decide not to do so.
