Question : Capturing handwriting

I want to digitize my handwritten notes realtime (i.e. writing notes at my desk that are stored in an image file using, I imagine,  a stylus and some kind of digital pad).  Would appreciate any pointers on what technologies to consider and any words of wisdom.
