You can add space to the system partition, but after you do so, you need to use a 3rd party tool like GParted (
http://gparted.sourceforge.net) or Paragon to see the added space in the guest OS. Use their site to get instructions on how to do so as well:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/pdf/Resizing.pdfVMware's KB on how to do this:
http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1004047 :
1. Open VMware Infrastructure (VI) Client and connect to VirtualCenter or the ESX host.
2. Right-click the virtual machine.
3. Click Edit Settings.
4. Select Virtual Disk.
5. Increase the size of the disk
And:
http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1004071Another option is to use vCenter Converter Standalone to 'convert' the VM and during the conversion wizard, choose to increase the size of the system partition disk:
https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?p=converter&rct=j&sa=X&ei=IAtSTPrRG4GpngedtOTxAg&ved=0CBYQqwMoADAA&q=vcenter%20standalone%20converter&usg=AFQjCNHJVT9EwlQ2DLQ-GJNuKox8oj5gCQGuide:
http://www.vmware.com/pdf/converter_standalone_guide401.pdf (pg. 34 begins steps on how to convert)
Though that would take longer IMO.
