Question : ntfs server 2003 folders name chaning and icons changing randomly

we have a 2003 domain.  we have xp pro pcs mapped to 2003 server shares.  the Home directory for staff is on the file server shares.  we have staff personal folders randomly changing to my documents.  the icons are changint to a file folder with piece of paper on it. which is different.  we have 4 folders that now have the same name but different owners in ntfs security.  they are somehow linked together. renaming 1 folder renames them all. any thoughts??  thanks

Answer : ntfs server 2003 folders name chaning and icons changing randomly

could you be a little more explicit when you say, personal folders are changing to my documents?
You mean that any random folder a user creates, can/will/has probability to change its name to "My Documents" and the folder icon becomes the Paper icon?
And, are these goofy changes happing when the client logs into a computer, or are you noticing these problems on the server side of things?

If this is the case, then the problem is associated with "desktop.ini" files. i would check the folders for "desktop.ini" files, rename every one of them (with a dash or somethin in front of their names) [make sure you enable hidden system files/folders, ect, in folder options and for what to search for). this will start to eliminate the folders when they change to "bob's documents" and other things.

next i would check to make sure (a specified, or all, or a little sample) of the user's Document folder actually points to the proper path, and if not, maybe the whole lot was corrupted somewhere/how and the server(maybe clients) system needs to be diagnosed.
