Question : Windows Vista Home Basic - No Desktop

I have a client machine which would not get a network connection and thus could not get onto the internet.
I started it in safe mode with networking, which got the network connection.  I then downloaded & installed Malwarebytes and it found about 40 viruses and removed them (I think)

Now when I start the PC up in normal mode, I can click on the user and enter their password, then the Welcome screen comes up, then it goes to a black screen with active mouse but no desktop.
I presume the viruses have done something when we tried to remove them after finding them!
Before installing Malwarebytes and finding the viruses the PC could boot up to desktop but could not get a network connection.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
