Question : USB Device Not Recognized

Hey guys,

I have a client here who owns an Acer Aspire 5542-1462 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit. His issue is that he gets a message every 30-45 seconds that says "Usb Device Not Recognized". He clicks on it and in the box where it shows what device/port malfunctioned, nothing is listed.

I went ahead and updated all his drivers and every other windows update available for his computer, and tested all 4 USB ports on his laptop. They all work with no issues no matter what's plugged in (tried a mouse, USB Speakers, and a printer). Any advice or direction where to go next would be greatly appreciated.

Answer : USB Device Not Recognized

Humm... sounds like a malware trying to access USB port (maybe a autorun-style malware).  I think you should do a full scan against viruses with a local and an online antivirus. After that, scan the Windows with SpyBot and remove possible malwares that can be found.

And then you can look at internals ways, with HijackThis and analyze each process. The Process Explorer and some USB monitor software can help you too. One process is accessing the USB port. Your job is to discover it. :)

Good antivirus - McAfee, Sophos, NOD32
Goood online antivirus - housecall.trendmicro.com
SpyBot - www.safer-networking.org
HijackThis - www.hijackthis.de
Process Explorer - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Advanced USB Port Monitor - www.aggsoft.com/usb-port-monitor.htm

Good luck!
