Question : How to use onchange to enter value in another text field

We have a form with a text field, with one javascript onkeyup to prevent commas being entered. Help is requested for the following please:-

The text field has default text. If it is changed, we want antother hidden text field (preferably) or checkbox to have its value changed or removed.

1) How should the onchange be written to do this?
2) How to put this onchange side by side with the existing onkeyup so both work for the same text field?
