Question : HP Procurve 2810-48G or HP Procurve 2910-48G switch differences

I'm trying to figure out which switch I need to buy.  I was told the main difference might be the 2900 series can do vlan routing and the 2800 cannot.  Is this true and if so, how do I know if I need it or not?

Answer : HP Procurve 2810-48G or HP Procurve 2910-48G switch differences

2810 as from here: http://h10144.www1.hp.com/products/switches/HP_ProCurve_Switch_2810_Series/overview.htm
is simple L2 switch.

2910al as from here: http://h10144.www1.hp.com/products/switches/HP_ProCurve_2910al_Switch_Series/overview.htm#J9147A
has also basic L3 features with static routing and dynamic routing with RIP.

do you need routing or not? this is a Q for you to answer :) here you can get only hints and recommendations.
so if you are planning to use multiple vlans, then you will need  to arrange routing between them. it can be done using your firewall, or switch's L3 routing options.
Combination of both is also possible, because switch can route between subnets, but can't do sophisticated traffic filtering.

If you have only one subnet (hence you have a single vlan) you don't need routing, so you can save some cash for your boss.
