Question : Sync contacts from macbook to iphone using mobileme

just cleaned up my address book on my macbook OS 10.6.4
 and deleted a bunch of old contacts.

How can I prevent the iphone 4 from restoring those contacts onto my macbook? I can't find the preference settings for that; I am synching thru mobileme.

I am avoiding going through Itunes to keep it simple and consistent.
