Question : Restoring a Windows 2003 server from ntbackup
I replaced a drive in a raid 5 configuration on a windows 2003 server. Should have just worked, but has done nothing but cause problems. After I rebuilt the drive, it would no longer boot. claimed it was missing all the windows files. So I reloaded Windows 2003 server SP1. Then I took my usb drive that has the c and d drives backed up to it (backed up using ntbackup) and then just restored c and d on top of the Windows 2003 server SP1. The server backup did not include the system state. I was trying some software out and for what ever reason, it didn't include that. The machine was running Windows server 2003 SP2 before the reload. Now it says that Windows could not start because of an error in the software. load needed DLLs for HAL. I have burned the HAL.DLL and NTOSKRNL.EXE from the backup to a CD and used recovery console to copy them back over. It still gets the same error. Are there other files I need? Why didn't the restore of the backup c and d drive not just work? This computer is a domain controller at a branch location. If I can't just restore these drives from the backup and it work, I will have other questions since the old server is still in the active directory.
Answer : Restoring a Windows 2003 server from ntbackup
You will need to remove it from AD, then join the new server to the domain and run dcpromo.
