Question : Terminal Services License Server in a mixed 2003 / 2008 infrastructure
We run a Terminal Services infrastructure with 3 participating servers; an Exchange Server that doubles as DC, a File and Print server, and a Terminal Server onto which client log in. The TS Licenses are managed off the DC (which is a 2003 server). This infrastructure has been running perfectly for 6 years. A few months ago the TS server had a hardware error and was replaced. Alas the new server is 2008 R2. This means new CALs for Terminal Services (which is not an insurmountable problem) but the thing that has me unstuck is how to get the TS-CALs to work.
The domain Controller is Server 2003 (and there is no reason to change this). 2008 TS-CALs can't be loaded onto a 2003 server.
I tried the option of bringing another 2008 R2 server on-line and configuring it as a TS License Server (that worked), but when I manage the License server on 2008 it defers to the 2003 server - and according to what I have read this is because the DC has priority.
What I ideally want to achieve is:
Remove the 2003 TS-CALs from the current 2003 server
Load TS-CALs for 2003 and 2008 onto the current File Server (which is 2008 R2)
Set a Group Policy that directs the users logging in on the TS Server (2008) to get a CAL from the File Server (2008) while still authenticating onto the DC (2003).
I have contacted Microsoft in this regard and their suggestion was to upgrade the DC to 2008 - which is not on my list of desired solutions.
Answer : Terminal Services License Server in a mixed 2003 / 2008 infrastructure
Remove the 2003 TS-CALs from the current 2003 server - i belive you cant do this if your going to 2k8
Load TS-CALs for 2003 and 2008 onto the current File Server (which is 2008 R2) - these will need to be new CALS
