Question : Users experiencing network connectivity issues on Multihomed Windows Server 2008 DC

I recently inherited a customer with  a Multihomed DC.
Roles are:
Active Directory
DHCP Server
DNS Server
File Services
Network Access & Policy
Print Services
Terminal Services

There are 2 Nics.  One is for Private other is for Public (internet).  I have read numerous articles saying that a DC should not act as a Nat Router.  There is no point to it.  It just causes numerous problems.

So I've decided to purchase an inexpensive Router just for Nat and turn off DHCP on the router.  I will need PPTP VPN capablilities directly to the server (which is currently configured).

So my questions are:

1)  Do you agree with my assessment?
2)  I need help configuring the DC properly to remove Nat Routing, keep VPN Server accessible, reconfigure DNS and any other suggestions you deem necessary.

Please let me know what you think.  I will provide addtional info as requested.

Thank you

Answer : Users experiencing network connectivity issues on Multihomed Windows Server 2008 DC

Yes, your assement is correct multihomed DCs can cause multiple issues.

I would purchase a router with VPN technology included which will give you perimeter security and access to the local network.

When you want to remove RRAS from the server disable the second NIC then remove RRAS which will remove all settings.
