Well, you seem to be thinking that digital zoom is going to improve the picture quality somehow... it is not. All digital zoom does is make the pixels (which are there already), larger. If you have enought pixels to begin with, then the digital zoom essentially lets you make it larger and crop it. So a 1600x1200 frame is equivalent to 640x480 @2.5x optical zoom (assuming sufficient light to feed the CCD sensor).
