Question : How to upgrade EXSi 4 embedded to ESXi 4.1 ? DELL R610 Embedded ESXi 4

Hi,

I have three DELL ESXi hosts boxes i just received. They are configured with ESXi 4 Embedded. I'd like to upgrade to 4.1. From VMware i've downloaded the zip update from 4.0 to 4.1. The VMware Host Update Utility wants to install only updates that pretain to 4.0 Update 2. I tried the VMware Host Update Utility ZIP file upload, but that fails saying it can't read metadata.

From what I'm thinking is that there are DELL specific optional downloads from the VMware ESXi download site and Dell/VMware didn't make an update for their embedded devices. Or do you have another suggestion?

I tried the vCLI but not using it before all I could do was login.

I don't think there is any difference between upgrading installable vs embedded. If you don't have vcenter then use the vihostupdate command line utility. Look at the upgrade guide (http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_upgrade_guide.pdf) starting on about page 61.
